Weekend Fly-in to Calaveras County
We'll be attending the California County Fair and Frog Jumping Jubilee in Angels Camp. Mark Twain fans will recall his story of “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County.” The tradition continues in Calaveras today. This is prime “California Gold Country” and there is plenty of touring options and wine tasting in the area.
Here's the itinerary:
Friday, May 16
Fly into Columbia Airport.
Rental Cars: There are two rental cars offered at the airport as well as an Enterprise office in Sonora (about a 17 minute drive). Enterprise does not drop at the airport but Jodie and Larry will be driving to the event and can help shuttle people to Enterprise to pick up their car. Since this Enterprise offers an after-hours drop off option on Sunday, people can rent just for two days.
Hotel: The Chicken Ranch Resort Casino is a brand new, completely non-smoking hotel in Jamestown (about a 15 minute drive from the airport or Enterprise). The hotel has three restaurants and a small but nice gaming area. We have a block of 10 rooms for $199/night (king or double queen). You can cancel up to 48 hours before arrival without charge. Happy Hour: Location in the hotel TBD.
Dinner: On your own. There are dining options at the hotel, in Jamestown (5 minute drive), or Sonora (11 minute drive).
Saturday, May 17
Morning/Afternoon - Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee. The fairgrounds are about a 25 minute drive from the hotel. The schedule hasn’t been published yet but there are a lot of rodeo/agricultural events, carnival, live entertainment and frog jump contest. A link to the 2025 Fair will be posted when it's available.
Saturday Evening Group Dinner: Location TBD
Sunday, May 18
Departure: You will have the option to spend time in Sonora, Murphys (36 minute drive), or Columbia State Park. The state park has a historical reenactment event going on that weekend. If people choose to drop their car before going to the park, you can walk to the park from the airport. Jodie and Larry will be available to help shuttle people from Enterprise to the airport or state park.
