DAFers Descend on Vegas
Blue skies, reasonably smooth air and a nice dry heat greeted 13 DAFers for the Las Vegas fly-in on October 7-9. After unpacking in our very nice rooms at the MGM Grand, everyone met up in Peter and Liz's room for the traditional Happy Hour. Most of the group ended up having dinner together Friday night at Wolfgang Pucks.
On Saturday morning, a few of the group headed out to tour Hoover Dam - the less energetic took the opportunity to sleep in. On Saturday evening, the group converged at the Paris Hotel, had a quick drink, and then sat down for the Jersey Boys show. The show was very good and a lot of fun (and exceeded this writer's expectations)
A number of Liz's family also came to the show, and everyone had a chance to "Meet the Morski's". There were a lot of them - it was a very Morski-rich environment.
After the show, everyone went to the Mon Ami Gabi Bistro for dinner. The food was fantastic - this is a very popular place. Most everyone went back to the hotel after dinner, except for a few hearty souls who started an ill-fated search for a nearby dance place.
Thanks again to Liz Broen for organizing a very special weekend.
2012 Annual Hangar Party
DAFers Celebrate End of Civilization As We Know It.
Despite the bothersome presence of zombies, cross-border raids by Texan irregulars, and diminishing supplies of margarita salt, over 90 DAFers put on a brave face and celebrated at the Del Amo Flyers annual hangar party on August 25.
Post-apocalypse hipsters Craig and Jody Narr manned the the Bombs Away Bar ("Falling Since 2019") which was, in an example of disastrous planning, located next to "Ye Olde Vampire Squirrel Shooting Gallery". Mitch Taylor tried to keep spirits up by hanging pictures that documented the many heroic feats and victories of the Fightin' DAFers since the war of 2019.
Commander Taylor also helped keep the troops fed with offerings of grilled tri-tip and chicken (sources unspecified), with the assistance of sous chef, Lt. Curtis Hahn. As far as post-apocalyptic banquets go, the food was pretty good.
The club is once again very grateful to Lambi and Sally for making their hangar available for the party. Thanks to all the DAFers who helped with setup and cleanup of this year's event, with special thanks to the Hangar Party planning committee: Mitch and Jan Taylor, Craig and Jody Narr, Peter and Liz Broen, Jodie and Larry Chapman, Mary and Richard Falstrom and our supreme commander Joe Cogan.

Special Mojito Marinade
There were some great compliments about the chicken at the hangar party. Most of the credit goes to our superlative chefs, Curtis and Larry, for their searing skill. The rest goes to this marinade. A little rum and lime juice improves anything!....Mitch and Jan
1/4 cup chopped fresh mint
1/4 cup rum (the recipe called for white, but I'm an unbiased person so I used gold)
2 tablespoons kosher salt
Finely chopped zest of 1 lime
Juice of three or four limes (about 1/2 cup)
1/3 cup sugar
Mix it all up, put the chicken in it for about 3-4 hours, and grill.
July Dinner Meeting
The club's second dinner meeting at Palos Verdes Golf Club on July 17 did not disappoint. Attendance was strong with quite a few new, as well as prospective, members attending. Status updates were presented on September's fly-in to Las Vegas and November's trip to Alamos, Mexico. Mitch also presented details for the upcoming Hangar Party on August 25. (This year's theme, "General Aviation in the Post Apocalyptic World", apparently baffled some of the audience, while intriguing others). The evening's program was a great video on the early history of the U.S. Air Mail program presented by Mitch.
Another Successful Flaming Brisket
Participants included an estimated 14 airplanes, 2 cars, 30 people and at least 2 dogs. Some planes and faces new to the DAF were seen on the ramp at Agua Dulce as evidence that the DAF family is growing.
Three members of the Tiger Squadron arrived at Ague Dulce in a parade formation. The two CJs and Yak separated in the overhead break and landed individually on the narrow runway. Because they avoided temptation and didn't execute any low passes (with smoke), the DAF may be able to go back next year.
Thanks, Mitch, for another outstanding event.
June Dinner Meeting
Our June dinner meeting was the first to be held at our new venue - the Palos Verdes Golf Club. It was by far our best attendance for the year, and everyone seemed to enjoy the new facilities and services. New name badges were introduced, designed and produced by Maria Grau (with a little help from Wayne). For these efforts, as well as the highly effective Fly-In photo boards that she created for the DAF Meet & Greet BBQ, Maria received the highly-coveted Wings Award. Congratulations, Maria!
The program was an aviation photography presentation by Frank Mormillo, who is currently associated with the Planes of Fame Museum in Chino. Thanks to Frank for showing us some stunning shots.
